Leaks and water where it shouldn't be
If there's water coming through a ceiling, out of a pipe or across the floor, ring me. Before you do anything else, turn the water off at the stopcock if you can.
What I get called for
- Leaking pipes and joints
- Water coming through a ceiling
- Leaking toilets, cisterns and taps that won't turn off
- Radiator and radiator valve leaks
- Making it safe so you can use the rest of the house
What happens when I turn up
- First: turn off the water at the stopcock. It's usually under the kitchen sink, or where the water pipe comes into the house. If water is near sockets or lights, keep away from them.
- Ring or text me. Tell me where the water is, whether you've managed to turn it off, and your postcode.
- When I get there I find where it's coming from and stop it. Then I tell you what the proper fix is, and the price, before I do it.
- If the water has got into the electrics, you'll need an electrician as well. I'll say so if that's the case.
Questions
Where's my stopcock?
Most often under the kitchen sink. If it's not there, try where the water pipe comes into the house, a downstairs toilet, or the garage. Turn it clockwise to shut it off.
Can you come straight out?
Ring me and I'll tell you honestly when I can get there. If I can't get to you quickly, I'll say so, so you can call someone else.
The water's coming from the boiler. Can you help?
No. If it's the boiler itself, you need a Gas Safe engineer. Turn the water off if you can and call one.
Should I text or ring?
For a leak, ring. If I'm on a job and miss it, text me where the water is and your postcode, and I'll call you back.
